City Facts for Murray, UT
Murray, UT was first inhabited by the Ute Indians. A Mormon pioneer group called the Mississippi Saints arrived in the Murray area in 1848. Murray was distinguished by various names such as the Mississippi Ward, Cottonwood, South Cottonwood, and Big Cottonwood. Because of its central location and access to the railroad, in 1870, the first smelter was built in Murray and became the home of some of the largest smelters in the region over the next 30 years. A large number of workers came from Greece, Armenia, Italy, Yugoslavia, and Japan to work in the smelters in Murray. In 1883, the post office gave the city its present-day name when the name was officially changed from South Cottonwood Post Office to Murray Post Office after the territorial governor and civil war general, Eli Murray. Murray City became an official city in 1903. Murray has one of the lowest city tax rates in the state of Utah.
